On July 12, 2023, several union workers of ILA Local 1410 traveled to the South Carolina State House to join ILA workers and other unions and organizations in a show of strength. For over two years, the ILA and South Carolina State Ports Authority have been locked in a legal dispute regarding who will operate the ship-to-shore cranes at Leatherman Terminal in North Charleston.
During a June 6th hearing, three federal judges were split on key issues of the case; however, in late-July 2023, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 to uphold a National Labor and Relations Board decision that only union employees can operate the cranes at the Port of Charleston’s Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal.
This is a momentous victory for the ILA workers in the Port of Charleston and the ILA collectively.
